The 2008 season for the New York Yankees was a disappointing one for the team and there fans. In a tough American League East, the Yankees finished in third place behind the upstart Tampa Bay Rays and their long time rival Boston Red Sox. Needless to say, the Steinbrenner family did not envision closing the old Yankee Stadium with a season in which the franchise failed to make the playoffs. General Manager Brian Cashman and ownership entered this off-season knowing they needed to make a big splash to keep the thousands of fans who bought New York Yankees tickets happy, so that is what they did.
The New York Mets are entering the new season looking to overcome the late season collapses of the last two seasons by winning the National League East in 2009. In previous MLB seasons, fans and the baseball media have placed the blame for Mets collapse on their sub-par. General Manager Omar Minaya has addressed the pressing issue by acquiring two of the premier closers in Major League Baseball. Much to the delight to all those who bought tickets for the 2009 season, the team signed closer Francisco Rodriguez to lead the rebuilt bullpen. Then just days later, they went out and traded for J.J. Putz, who closed games for the Seattle Mariners last season. The two combined for 77 saves last in 2008, and will look to lock down the eighth and ninth innings in New York.
