Baseball Hitting Instruction - Batting Stance Important

Baseball Hitting Instruction - Batting Stance Important? by Nick Demyanovich

So when you go to the ballpark and watch Major Leaguers up at the plate, do they all stand in the batter’s box the same way? NO… and why should they? They’re smart, and understand that their batting stance has nothing to do with their approach to hit the ball!
Your Batting Stance is Your Unique “Fashion”

A batting stance is really just a natural stance that hitters get into because it feels comfortable to them. Comfort is extremely important, because if you’re not comfortable, then you will NOT produce for your team! Everybody stands in the batter’s box however they want to. But when they go to hit a baseball, everything comes together to strike the ball in the CORRECT manner. So don’t let anyone try to tell you that your batting stance is not conducive to hitting a baseball for power, because that’s just FALSE information! Let me give you some examples so you can understand it all a little better.

Hand Placement is KEY!

Hand placement is a critical component of your swing, because most of your power comes from the positioning of your arms and hands when hitting a baseball. To put it simply, where would you want your hands if you were to throw a punch at someone? Would you want them far away from your body, or tightly snug in front of your chest ready to explode. Well you would select the latter choice of course! But then why is it that Major Leaguers hold their hands in all different locations? Well as I said before, it is insignificant where they are originally held. All that matters is how your hands and arms line up when you’re bringing them through the strike zone to hit the ball. You must understand this important FACT! Therefore, it definitely would make more sense to hold your hands closer to your body (mainly your back shoulder) so that they are already in position to hit the ball; however this is NOT necessary if you are comfortable in your stance.

Create a Solid Base for Yourself

Another vital aspect of your swing is how your legs are positioned. Essentially, you want to have a fairly wide base during your swing so you can achieve excellent balance for optimal power and performance. So it would be much easier to set up in a stance with your legs about shoulder width, and only have to take a small step towards the ball when attempting to hit the ball.

But as you now know, this is NOT necessary. Remember how Ken Griffey Jr. used to stand in his stance in his prime (almost straight up with his legs close together). He was very comfortable this way, and then when he went to swing the bat, his step was much larger so that he attained a wider, more balanced final position.

So don’t let anyone try to manipulate your batting stance if you are truly comfortable the way you are currently positioned. But if your hitting mechanics are flawed during your approach to hit the ball, then you have a major problem and will need to investigate that much further. Is it time for the Mets to throw in the towel

Is it time for the Mets to throw in the towel? by Mr. Methead

The New York Mets entered the 2009 season as a near favorite to win their division, if not the clear cut favorite to win the National League East. The acquisition of big name players like Francisco Rodriguez finally solved the bullpen problem that so many critics pointed a finger at, and the additions of key role players like Gary Sheffield firmed up a lineup that was previously considered shallow after its stars.
What began as a promising season has quickly turned into a major disappointment for Mets fans. The team has now sunk to 44-49, losing what would normally be considered easy games at Washington against the Nationals, and having no bats to show for anything. The Mets have scored 2 runs or less in 10 of their last 17 games, and injuries to stars like Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado, and John Maine have made things even harder to deal with.

Jerry Manuel has been under constant criticism of late. Don’t be surprised to see a regime change sometime soon. With that in mind, the Mets might be keen to throw in the towel and let its young talent take the reins. The fans have Citi Field to enjoy anyway.

Top Five MLB All-Star Game Moments

Top Five MLB All-Star Game Moments by Bet Online

It’s July and that means MLB All-Star game odds are posted and ready for July 14. The Midsummer Classic is fun to wager on, especially since the game really means something to both teams, but it’s also fun to just enjoy it for the love of the game. Let’s look back at some of the most memorable All-Star Game moments of all time.
5. Josh Hamilton’s Home Run Derby magic (2008)

Am I cheating right away here? It’s not from the actual All-Star Game, but it was a special moment during the 2008 All-Star festivities. Having battled back from drug addiction, former No. 1 overall pick Josh Hamilton dazzled at the Home Run Derby, smashing 28 homers in one round. That’s not a misprint and it’s clearly a record. I’m betting management in Cincinnati wouldn’t mind having him back.

4. The tie (2002)

Top moments don’t always have to be positive. The 2002 All-Star Game will live on in infamy forever. After each team used up every reliever and spare pitcher through 11 innings, Commissioner Bud Selig called the game and received a chorus of boos from the crowd. The good news: the reaction hit home, as the rules were changed the following year to award the All-Star Game winner home field in the World Series.

3. Stan the Man completes the comeback (1955)

Imagine if a turnaround like this happened today? A lot of people would get cleaned out at the offshore sportsbook. Completing the greatest comeback in All-Star Game history, Stan Musial hit a walkoff homer in the bottom of the 12th off Frank Sullivan as the National League rallied from a 5-0 deficit. You can’t write that kind of stuff.

2. Randy Johnson terrorizes John Kruk (1993)

In one of the most hilarious at-bats not just in All-Star Game history, but in baseball history, 6′10″ flamethrower Randy Johnson, then a rising superstar, had rugged Phillies first baseman John Kruk shaking in his boots. The Big Unit sailed a 100 MPH fastball over Kruk’s head and had him ducking and swinging wildly throughout the at-bat before sitting him down on strikes.

1. Charlie Hustle earns his nickname (1970)

Is there a more iconic play in Pete Rose’s career than the end of the 1970 All-Star Game? Running home during a tie game on a hit by Jim Hickman, Rose never slowed down once Indians’ catcher Ray Fosse caught the ball at home plate. Rose lowered the shoulder and bowled Fosse over, knocking the ball loose and giving the National League a controversial win that no one foresaw in their sports predictions.

Exercises to Jump Higher - 4 Surefire Exercises to Increase Your Vertical Jump

Exercises to Jump Higher - 4 Surefire Exercises to Increase Your Vertical Jump by Simon Cahl

Many folks are using special systems and exercises to jump higher. Even though there are numerous exercises that you can do to boost your vertical jump, I’m going to give you some that have worked for me. Remember that prior to performing these exercises, you should warm up and stretch to reduce injury to the muscle groups you will be exercising. A good way to heat up and loosen up is to use a jumprope, if you have one.

Toe Lifts

This exercises is reasonably self explanatory. Toe raises exercises several muscle groups that are concerned in jumping, and are a great way to stretch the ligaments in the ankle to reduce injury in the future. To perform this workout simply stand erect, and lift to your toes. Be sure to move slowly and stretch as high as you can presumably go. Prevent yourself to rotating forwards and forwards. Once you reach a point you can and should use weights to extend resistance. These will greatly help you to jump higher.

Deep knee bends work on the major muscle groups that are concerned in jumping. You need to go down as you can go without discomfort, this is mostly below a 90 degree angle. Slowly raise to an erect position, making sure that your back stays at the same angle.

Crunches/Sit Ups

Stomach crunches are a particularly easy exercises that will raise your core strength. Believe it or not, your abdominal muscles are primarily concerned when jumping.Use your own weight in your favor when doing crunches. You’ll start to see your core tighten up rather quickly, and you’ll notice all the benefits that go along with that.

Jump-rope

If you have a jumping rope, use it. You can accomplish this nearly anywhere and any time, such as watching Television . Employing a jumprope isn’t just good for your cardiovascular endurance, but it also helps to stretch the core muscles concerned in leaping.

The MVP of Sports

The MVP of Sports by Soophott Lert

When thinking about MVP in the sports world one would instinctively think of the most valuable player. MVP can actually mean a variety of things. It can be clothing apparel, equipment or even physical therapy.
Most of the time, you are looking for a player that has statistics that stand out above all others. You want to find the best of the best for that particular sport. Every year, there is a MVP player in all sports. They will give an award to that person recognizing their achievement in their sport.

You can also find clothing for your team or just for an individual. If you have favorite football team and there is a certain player that has stats better than any other player on the team, you will be able to go to a store or go online and purchase there jersey or some other clothing item that has there name on it.

This is made possible because they are the best of the best in there game. At the end of every season, when all of the stats are in, someone else can become the mvp of the season. Players will try to keep that status as long as they can.

Since there are so many injuries in the sports world, you can also have the option of getting mvp sports treatment. You can get the same exact type of treatment that the stars get for their injuries. For some, the status of this makes them feel special. For others, they feel that they are paying more for the same treatment that they could get somewhere else.

Everyone has there own opinion on what mvp status stands for. Parents that have children who play sports, may feel that there son or daughter has mvp status. They will purchase the best of the best for them and hold nothing back.

Others who have a family member or friend that have been through some sort of tragedy may feel that they hold that same sort of status. It all depends on personal opinion and in what matter you are looking at the situation.

We all want to be stars in one way or another. Some of us just have to work a little harder at it the others. As they say, it is all in the eye of the beholder. You could be special at school or at work, but deep in our hearts, we all want to be a mvp in sports.

15 Tips and Tricks for Golfing with Kids

15 Tips and Tricks for Golfing with Kids by Rick Fletcher

While playing golf with my own three boys since they were 5 years old (they’re all teenagers now), I experienced my share of emotions while teaching them how to play golf. From watching them enjoy the thrill of hitting great shots to teaching them not to throw golf balls at each other, it’s been a wild, wonderful ride. I’m really glad I discovered golf just as I was becoming a father for the first time, at the ripe old age of 31. Its been a fun way to spend time with my kids while preparing them for life. Included in each 18 hole round, at no extra charge, is plenty of practice learning how to cope with the successes and failures that inevitably occur.
Of all the tips and tricks I learned from playing golf with my kids, here are my 15 favorites:

Call ahead for the best times for juniors to play and special rates.
Take a camera to record the fun - digital pictures make great screensavers or wallpaper on home PC’s!
Set up junior’s bag with balls, tees, ball markers and a water bottle.
On the way to the course, let your junior know you will be teeing off from the tee box, then they will tee off from a closer “kid’s tee” about 100 to 150 yards away from the green.
Get yourself in the right frame of mind for what is about to occur. Your child is depending on you to have an infinite amount of patience and understanding. It will be difficult to show either if you are carrying concerns about other “less fun” aspects of your life. Make a conscious effort to HAVE FUN by considering yourself to be the luckiest person on earth to get the opportunity to teach a great sport to a great kid in a great place. Of all the things to do on earth and places to be, which could be better?
Try to rent a cart to make it like Disneyland…kids LOVE to ride in golf carts!
Before your first tee shot, teach your junior how to wait until the one farthest from the green hits first and to never hit if anyone is in front of you. Demonstrate by standing to the side then standing ahead of them, so they get a clear picture of what you mean.
When you arrive at the “kid’s tee” location, let them tee up a ball and hit. It’s OK to give them two or three tries, remind them you are not keeping score and are just here to practice. Try to use “expendable” golf balls so if they go into the woods or lake it won’t be of much concern.
When you reach the green, let your junior know it is not OK to run on the greens. Also, remind them the “farthest away shoots first” rule still applies and to be still while other people are putting.
One of the more difficult concepts for kids to learn is how to avoid walking on other player’s putting lines, so don’t be surprised if you have to remind them several times. It’s best to show them how to draw invisible lines to each ball, and how easy it is to avoid walking on putting lines by walking around (behind) the other players.
Regardless of what they have seen on TV, it’s not OK to throw clubs or balls. It can happen, but a reminder about how you don’t like to play golf with people like that can go a long way.
Teach your junior how to consider those behind and that it’s OK to pick up in order to keep up (their place on the course is behind the group in front). You will have to use your judgment when to pick up on any given hole, but if you pay attention to the group behind and pick up when you see them waiting, everything should go smoothly. If there is no one behind the group behind you, it’s OK to step to the side of the fairway and wave them through.
When the ball goes into the water or into the woods, it’s best to look for a short time, take the drop and hit right away. Trying to keep up with the group ahead while teaching a child to play golf is tough enough without adding time to look for lost golf balls!
It’s OK to quit when attention fades or if things just aren’t going well. If you get off the course before the child gets too whiny or upset, the chances are much higher they will look forward to coming back.
On the way home from the course, ask your child what they liked about golfing and what they didn’t like. You may be surprised at their answers! Make plans to try to fix the things they didn’t like and do more of what they did like next time. After a few trips, you will be absolutely amazed at how automatic the little things will become and how you can then devote complete attention to enjoying the great game of golf together!

You will undoubtedly add to the list as you go - rest assured you are making wonderful memories you will share with your kids for years to come!

Parallel Bat Rolling or Perpendicular Bat Rolling?

Parallel Bat Rolling or Perpendicular Bat Rolling? by Chase Rodgers

Perpendicular Bat Rolling
Perpendicular bat rolling is a process that rolls a softball or baseball bat through two nylon or hard rubber rollers. This bat rolling process will roll the entire length of the bat as it passes through the rollers on approximately a half inch line on both the top and bottom of the bat. The bat is rolled on 8-12 points around the bat which breaks in almost the entire bat as it passes through the bat rolling machine. The bat will make a slight crunching sound to an all out crackle and pop when going through the bat rolling machine. The sound depends on the type of bat and the bat’s thickness. If the bat has a thinner wall the bat will tend to pop or crackle sooner than a thicker walled bat. Certain bats can take more pressure than others during bat rolling. The key is to know how much pressure to place on the bat or the thinner walled bats will break during the bat rolling process. A Miken Freak, slowpitch softball bat, is able to with stand a lot of pressure and also needs that extra pressure to be fully broken in during bat rolling. TPS bats have a thinner wall and need less pressure when bat rolling, too much pressure will definitely break a bat in one pass going through perpendicularly. Now that a bat has been rolled on 8 to 12 points perpendicularly there should be peaks and valleys along the length of the bat. These highs and lows are created by bat rolling along certain points and not all points. Here lies a catch 22; the bat needs to be rolled completely but if it is rolled on too many points around the bat the potential for cracks increases substantially. When the bat goes through the rollers perpendicularly the rollers flatten the bat causing the resin (or glue) to break up, this is what gives the extra flex and makes bat rolling favorable to players. When the bat is rolled perpendicularly along too many points the area of the bat gets rolled twice, thrice, or maybe 4 times too much causing weak spots in your bat. Perpendicular bat rolling will break in your bat but not to its fullest potential; that is where the parallel bat rolling comes in.

Parallel Bat Rolling

Parallel bat rolling is a process that rolls the traditional sweet spot of the bat. As you could guess the bat is placed parallel with the bat rollers. The theory behind this is that the entire sweet spot of the bat would be rolled with out missing any areas within the sweet spot. Some bat rolling machine builders have taken the idea a little too far by expanding the length of their rollers to encompass almost the entire barrel. This type of bat roller is destined to cause problems. The area that is rolled is too large and will cause a decrease and an increase in pressure along the barrel. What do I mean, you ask? The mechanics of a bat roller with longer rollers will not allow for consistent pressure points along the barrel. Depending where the mechanism is placed to tighten the rollers down is where the most pressure will be on the bat and then diminish as it goes down the length of the bat. This means the composite will be broken in more in certain spots and not in others. Trying to break the bat in fully with a longer bat rolling machine could compromise the integrity of the bat in certain areas. The rollers that surround the sweet spot only are shorter and have a small disproportioned distribution of pressure which breaks in a bat more consistent. The parallel bat rolling machine should be used after it is run through a perpendicular bat rolling machine. This will allow the parallel bat rolling machine to break in any spots the perpendicular bat rolling machine has missed. The peaks and valleys that were discussed earlier will be flattened out by breaking up the resin and glue in those areas. This is the most consistent and even bat rolling you can accomplish. As a stand alone the parallel bat roller will work, as long as it has the shorter rollers (around a foot, which is the length of a sweet spot). The longer rollers will not roll a bat consistently and there is the danger of breaking a bat with an over zealous operator trying desperately to break in the entire barrel the same.

With all that said, I would suggest getting your bat rolled by a parallel bat rolling machine with shorter rollers and also does a perpendicular roll first. And if you are buying a bat rolling machine get the parallel one with the shorter rollers.

Teaching Youth Baseball

Teaching Youth Baseball by Trevor Sumner

Teaching youth baseball is a rewarding experience for both parents and coaches alike. While parents have an obvious investment in the teaching of the fundamentals of the sport of baseball to their children, coaches, make a significant investment of their own in time, effort and emotion. From a personal perspective, one of the greatest rewards is indeveloping relationships with and positively affecting the lives of individual youth baseball players. The lessons of sports such as in baseball are positive and well documented. For coaches, there are also the internal rewards they get from seeing each player develop and from watching a youth baseball team improve as a group and learn to play together under their coaching tutelage.
Astute coaches improve the performance of the team as a whole by employing youth baseball drills to improve the individual performances of team players and there interactions together. There are three main categories in which youth baseball drills will have an immense effect on the performance levels of players.

Youth Batting Drills - one of the most important of the youth baseball drills. The vast majority of youth baseball players have the most fun when they hit. The better they are able to hit, the more fun that they will have, and the greater their interest in the sport of baseball. Coaches and parents who teach baseball drills in batting must stress the importance of a well-balanced stance that is comfortable for the individual player, picking the ball up as it leaves the pitcher’s hand, and keeping the body weight back until the pitch is delivered. Youth Fielding Drills - an integral part of teaching the defensive position. Of course, there are sets of baseball fielding drills that are unique to each of the nine fielding positions in the game of baseball. However, there are baseball drills common to all fielding positions. One of the key youth baseball drills in catching ground balls is to keep the fingers of the fielding glove on the ground for ground balls, and raising the glove to catch the ball on the bounce, instead of lowering the glove. Another one of the instructional keys to fielding is to catch the thrown or batted ball with the wrist in an upward position for balls at or above the waist, and to turn the wrist upside down to catch balls below the waist. There are many ways to take a single drill and apply it so the whole team can practice at once. Youth Throwing Drills - the most basic of all youth baseball drills, and many instructors feel that it is the most important fundamental of all. It is vital for parents to make sure that their children develop proper throwing techniques from the time they can throw a baseball, around the age of eight or so. The importance of throwing a baseball with proper grip can not be overestimated. Youth throwing drills must emphasize four important elements: Throw the ball by gripping it with the index finger and middle finger on the ball; point your shoulder opposite from your throwing hand in the direction of your target; step in the direction of your target when you release the ball; and follow through after you release the ball with your back leg so that both legs are parallel upon the completion of the throw.

You can find many youth baseball drills on the Internet covering hitting, fielding and throwing. Some drills are free and some require subscription or for you to order a DVD. Free baseball drills allow you greater flexibility in trying a variety and see what works best for you as the coach and your youth baseball team. Always remember that drills should be age appropriate. The right fielding drill for a 14 year-old boy will not suit and 8-year old and vice versa.

There are many baseball coaching resources and communities like Weplay available to help with any questions you might have. Don’t underestimate the passion of the community around you. We are all here to help the kids.

Sports Psychology and Hitting - How to Survive a Hitting Slump - Eight Simple Tips

Sports Psychology and Hitting - How to Survive a Hitting Slump - Eight Simple Tips
By Jay Granat

A hitting slump has physical, psychological, emotional components to it. For the professional baseball player or the player seeking a scholarship, a slump can have significant financial and career implications.

Players, coaches, parents and agents can become quite frustrated by prolonged hitting slumps. Here are a few suggestions for managing hitting slumps.

1. Make sure you are technically and mechanically sound in the cage and in front of live pitching.

2. Keep accurate diaries and spreadsheets about pitchers who you face. Record all relevant data. Knowing what they threw you in specific situations is very helpful. Similarly, knowing how they like to pitch and how you did against them is essential information for a hitter who wants to excel at the sport of baseball. I know this record keeping seems laborious, but it will pay off with a shorter slump and a higher batting average.

3. Determine if you hit best with an empty mind or with one mental thought or idea at the plate. Most hitters do best with a simple thought or with a mind which is crystal clear and ready to allow the body to do what it is capable of doing at the plate.

4. Go back to some important basics: Keep your head very still. Don’t grip the bat too tightly. Hit the ball into the gaps. Focus on the path of the ball. Utilize a ritual which allows you to feel comfortable in the batter’s box. Know the strike zone very well.

5. Watch yourself on video when you are in a slump and compare this tape with a video of you when you were hitting well. You will be amazed at what you will learn from this exercise.

6. Use a new hitting coach to get a fresh outlook and a few new tips.

7. Consider a sports psychologist to help you master the mental aspects of hitting.

8. Learn how to use self-hypnosis to get your mind into a confident, focused, relaxed and optimistic state in the dugout, in the on deck circle and at the plate.

Why is Tendonitis Such a Danger For Baseball Pitchers?

Why is Tendonitis Such a Danger For Baseball Pitchers?
By Joshua Tucker

Read through baseball sports news, blogs, fantasy baseball sites, etc, and if you aren’t already aware of how dangerous pitching is to baseball players, you quickly will.

Why exactly is Tendonitis such a problem for Baseball Pitchers?

Managing a pitcher and how active he is major strategy in baseball, especially in Major League Baseball.

Every day I see news reports of various pitchers getting benched, being placed on the injured list, and sent off to surgery and weeks and months of recovery.

It’s too bad. All that could be avoided.

Tendonitis is an occupational hazard for major league baseball pitchers, and young men that work hard to join the ranks of a big league team.

Most of this kind of injury shows up in the arm anywhere from shoulder to fingers. Watch a pitcher throw a few times, it’s no surprise. Even then pitching efficiently and effortlessly, there is A LOT of force, torque, internal movement of tendons, and muscle contraction happening over and over.

Over time after hundreds or thousands of throws, after muscles firing powerfully and pulling forcefully on their tendons, the muscles get set tighter and tighter. This starts a long Downward Spiral of increasing tightness, then increasing pain and tightness.

Whether a tendon gets irritated or actually has some micro tear to the tissue, the body kicks in an Inflammation process. This enhances the Downward Spiral by making things hurt more, which makes muscles get tighter….which makes things hurt more.

If treated the usual way, injury comes and goes, players lose time and stats to time resting and recovering from surgery. Look at all the players that have had surgery. How many of them are back to 100%, months or years later? How many of them aren’t still dealing with tendonitis issues?

Tendonitis can end careers. It is a serious threat to a pitcher and his career. Whether it is Tennis Elbow, Wrist Tendonitis, a problem in the hand, Shoulder Cuff Tendonitis, or something similar, teams work hard to keep their pitchers healthy and able to play.

The problem really isn’t pitching.

The problem is that the pitchers aren’t doing the RIGHT self care to keep their bodies happy and healthy, as opposed to their bodies getting slowly more and more unhappy, until the pain is enough to stop them from pitching.

Rest, anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen, corticosteroid shots, and splints and braces really are not preventative measures. They just don’t work. Want proof? Watch sports news for a while.

Tendonitis is a threat to baseball pitchers because it is a natural result of how they use their bodies, how their bodies naturally respond to that kind of ongoing stress, and because pitchers don’t do the right kind of self care that successfully reverses the first two factors.

Joshua Tucker, B.A, C.M.T is The Tendonitis Expert. He educates, leads workshops, and trains individuals how to ELIMINATE their Tendonitis related issues like Tennis Elbow, Carpal Tunnel, Plantar Fasciitis, and Wrist Tendonitis. Joshua says “When you have tried all the usual options and they have failed, it’s still not to late to become pain free. It’s also never too early to start.”

Replay in Baseball

Replay in Baseball
By Jason Mesch

Last season the amount of buzz generated by the topic of replay in baseball was more than we have ever seen before. I can remember the catalyst behind all of these discussions and that was about a two week span where four or five calls were made incorrectly on home runs and foul balls that ultimately impacted the outcome of the game. The major concern was letting a wrong call determine the outcome of a game in the playoffs where both teams have a lot at stake among the players and among the team’s business operations.

So the big questions was whether or not there should be replay used in baseball. The anti-replay pundits will tell you that the human error part of the game is just a part of the game that should not be tinkered with. Baseball has gotten through a long history without having to resort to replay. But I believe that the pro-replay group has a very valid argument. Teams are playing for more than they ever have before. Baseball is seeing the best attendance league wide in the history of the game. There is a ton of money out there from merchandise and television contracts. So if a call is going to determine if a team goes to the World Series or even win the World Series the umpires absolutely have to get that call right.

The issue is that some people think that replay should only be used in important games like a one game playoff to determine a division winner or every game in the playoffs. But the problem there is that every single game is important in a professional sport. If the umpires blow a call early on in the season that ultimately results in a loss for a team and that team finishes one game out of a tie for first in the division, they miss the playoffs partially because that one call was blown. Of course it is up to the team to win enough games to get to the playoffs but if they had one more win they would at least have a shot. I do not think that you can pick and choose with which games to use replay. I do not want replay to invade every single aspect of baseball. I think that part of the magic of the game is when a close play happens and an umpire has to make a judgment call that he may or may not get correct.

That sometimes leads to unforgettable encounters between managers and umpires that gets crowds excited. Replay should only be used for the most important calls in a game and that usually boils down to whether or not a ball went over the outfield fence for a home run. We actually saw replay get used in this regard last season and it was helpful in getting the call correct. I have absolutely no problem with the crew chief looking at a replay on a disputable home run call to determine whether or not that player gets to trot around the bases. A home run can completely and totally change the complexion of a game and I fully believe that the umpires have to make sure that they get that call right. We have the technology available to us today that can enable us to do many different things that we were incapable of doing in the past.

Instant replay has been around for a long time now and I was not at all surprised when I heard that it was going to be used in football and it was only a matter of time before baseball jumped in and adopted a similar system. Do I like that replay is being used? Not really. I like that human error aspect of the game but when it comes to a home run call the umpire has to get it right. Not only for the team, the fans, and the league; but for all of those fantasy baseball players out there who got robbed of an Alex Rodriguez home run last year. I am only slightly kidding about the fantasy baseball aspect but it is something that Major League Baseball needs to start considering in its advertising and revenue generating. I will get into that at a different time though.

I hope that instant replay hangs around but only for the home run calls. I absolutely do not want to see it used on calls concerning whether or not a runner was safe at a base. If we start using cameras and replays to make every call…well then the umpires basically become obsolete. The overuse of replay could literally lead to labor problems between the umpires and Major League Baseball. I realize that is a pretty far stretch but stranger things have happened in labor wars between employers and employees. I just feel like there is some sort of magic within the game that revolves around asking the question of whether or not the umpire is going to get a call right. The only reason we even ask or get upset half the time is because we can actually see the replay after every single call if we want to.

Back in the day when replay did not exist people had to just kind of wonder whether or not an umpire got a call right and there was not as much talk about whether or not a call was right or wrong. We live in a different time and so the game is going to have to adjust. Purists will not like the adoption of instant replay but I honestly think that it will ultimately help the game and end debates about right or wrong calls that last entirely too long. This season will be the first in which replay will be used throughout the entirety of the regular season. We will see whether or not the institution of replay will help Major League Baseball usher in a new era.

The Old Shea Stadium

by Denise I Smithson

Shea Stadium. Oh, the memories that are evoked by those two words. It’s hard to believe that it’s gone after 44 years. It is even harder to think of the Mets as being an expansion team. Haven’t they been around forever? Oh, and for all you trivia buffs out there Shea Stadium was formerly known as the Flushing Meadow Park Municipal Stadium.

Throughout its history, Shea Stadium has housed some of the greatest names in baseball ever to appear on a baseball roster. Duke Snider, Nolan Ryan, Warren Spahn, Tom Seaver, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Yogi Berra, Casey Stengel, Richie Ashburn, and Gary Carter all made it to the baseball Hall of Fame. Other players, just as entertaining if not as famous, like Lenny “Nails” Dykstra and Gil Hodges that just gritted it out from day to day are also remembered with fondness.

Yes, there have been lots of good times and a few bad times; we’ve been confronted with ugly and outrageous behavior of players and fans, but in the end we have some awesome memories woven into the fabric of the stadium’s history. Take the 1986 Mets versus Boston Red Sox World Series game, for example, where we watched Dwight Gooden and Daryl Strawberry take the Mets to a victorious climax, winning the World Series that year. Regrettably, the notoriety and high living took its toll as both players spent the remaining years of their baseball careers dealing with the consequences of drug use and other problems.

We saw them win their first Championship in 1969 with the Miracle Mets when no one really knew of a young man on the roster who would spend the next 27 years striking out 5,714 batters. In fact there were so many historic moments throughout the history of Shea Stadium we could literally write a book about it. However, when it’s all said and done, the stadium may be gone as a new chapter begins, but the memories will live in the hearts of Mets fans around the world for eternity.

When the world was stunned by the news of the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, Shea Stadium became a relief center for supplies, food, and a place for the victims to stay. Who can forget the first game after that fateful day when the Mets helped to heal the city? For New Yorkers, it was one of the most inspiring nights ever in baseball history. Thousands of fans packed the stadium to watch as the Mets took on the Atlanta Braves. Before the game started the rescue workers were honored and Diana Ross sang God Bless America. It was a very moving experience as the two teams shook hands, united in the face of the tragedy that shook the world. Yes, our Shea Stadium is like no other. May we always remember and look with anticipation to 50 more years of baseball history.

10 Best Things About Online Sportsbooks

by Simon M Skinner

Because the use of the Internet has become so popular and widespread, many of us have discovered the pure bliss of online betting. Many of us love that we can sit at home in whatever clothes we want, and still be able to make a bet on one of the season’s most popular basketball game. Betting online is great, but do you know where you can look for help when you need it? If you are looking for online betting help, you should most definitely look for a sportsbook where you can place your bets. When looking for a great online sportsbook, there are a few things you should look for.

1. Reputation. We all know that our reputations are important. Even a sportsbook reputation is important. Check out the gambling website that you want to use and make sure that you know about it and know whether or not it is reliable, safe, etc.

2. Financial condition. You want to check out their financial background. You want them to be able to pay you if you win, right?

3. Ease of use. You don’t want to have to be a rocket scientist to maneuver through the site.

4. Cost. Many gambling websites do charge a certain expense, usually 99 percent of the time. However, the website you use does not have to charge an outrageous expense.

5. Variety of events. Just as you may not always want to bet on football, or always bet on golf (yes, people do bet on golf), you don’t want an online sportsbook where you can only bet on certain events.

6. Variety of location. This goes along with the explanation given above. You do not want to only have the chance to bet on certain events that take place in a certain country, state, or arena. With an online betting website, you should be able to have the world at your fingertips, and you should be able to bet on events all over the world as well.

7. Knowledge of rules. With online sportsbooks, you still have to obey the betting rules that have already been put forth at that certain track or arena. Even though you are not at the field or race track, you still have to follow the rules as if you were there and betting.

8. Availability. Make sure that your sportsbook is available by email as well as phone. It should also be available 24 hours a day so that you can check on certain events and bets whenever you need to.

9. Free things. Free stuff is something we all want. See if your sportsbook is able to match a percentage of your opening balance. Many online sportsbook also offer a sign up bonus.

10. Comprehensive website. This covers many little details. In full, make sure that your online sportsbook provides more service outside of just placing your bet. Find one that gives you information on the event as well as players, odds, and the results of the event. If you’re looking for reviews of top gambling websites visit www.sportsbook-watch.com

Soccer Pele

by Denise I Smithson

Pele, a former Brazilian footballer, is thought by many to be the greatest footballer in history. Pele is his nickname; he was born in Brazil with the given name of Edison (Edson) Arantes do Nascimento on October 23, 1940. While his birth certificate reads that his first name is Edison, his preference is Edson, but Pele is the name that this sports legend is known by.

The game seems nearly inconceivable without him. Pele is a man who seems to have been born to play football. His ball control and speed were both unparalleled; particularly his one of a kind passing skills. Fans serious and casual alike relished every opportunity to watch Pele. It seemed that miraculous plays were in store every time Pele had the ball. In his career, Pele scored 1,283 goals, 12 during World Cup tournaments (in 1958, 1968 and 1970). At the time, Pele was the only player to ever win three World Cup trophies.

It was Waldemar de Brito who discovered this incredible talent. de Brito started coaching Pele in 1954 and in only two years, Pele played his first professional match at the age of 16. A year later, Pele was in a starting position on Santos. He won his first World Cup at seventeen and by 1962, Pele was receiving regular offers of positions on European football teams. However, a move overseas was not in the cards for Pele - the Brazilian government declared him a national treasure, which barred his joining a foreign football club.

Pele continued playing for Santos until the end of his 17th season in 1972. He retired from football but would occasionally suit up during competitive matches. At the start of the 1975 season, he came out of this semi-retirement to play for the New York Cosmos who were part of the North American soccer League. Although many considered him to be past his prime, Pele was responsible for greatly increasing the interest and public awareness of soccer in the United States. In his third and last season with the Cosmos, he led the team to win the 1977 NASL championship.

Pele still holds a legendary status in Brazil and his fame lives on worldwide. The contributions Pele made to football led to his being named ambassador of football to the world by FIFA. Using his fame both to increase interest in football and well as to raise awareness of the plight of the less privileged around the world, Pele is universally acknowledged as the King of Football, along with being a American Soccer National Soccer Hall of Famer.

Get Acquainted With Yachting Tips

by Ferdinand Mekinsy

In naval slang the terms standing end and bitter end evoke the different parts of sailing knots, with the former suggesting the strain and the latter referring to the loose end one holds. Thus, most explanations you find about how to tie sailing knots use these expressions abundantly. Hence, in case you are a beginner, it is good to first get familiar with the basic naval vocabulary before moving to more advanced learning levels.

The specificity of catamaran sailing is closely related to the very structure of such boats; tacking for instance is much more challenging when there are no dagger or center boards. One other issue here concerns the downwind move of such boats, and with the catamaran being lighter as compared to the size of the sail, the sailor has to know how to use the jib sail at its maximum potential in order to avoid getting into a wind dead point. This means that the great fun of catamaran sailing comes from the swiftness of this boat due to the use of a larger sail. Hence, with a catamaran you can be 1.5 times faster than the wind.

Though the very name of sailing boat makes one think that the main element in the design is the sail, we need to mention the fact that the sail alone is insufficient when it comes to driving the boat in specific direction. All by itself, the sail would only lead the boat where the wind blows. It is the underwater structural element: the keep, the centerboard or even the hull as such that allow the sailor to go into the right direction. Thus, we could say that the sailing boat is set in motion by the combined action of the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic forces.

Powered by wind, sailing ships have the longest history in the annals of navigation. Before the invention of the steam engine, the combined power of wind and oars was the only one that propelled the vessels. Nowadays, sailing ships are recreational vessels or boats that are ideal for cruises and coast explorations enjoyed by holiday makers and passionate sailors. Despite the large diversity of sailing ships models, there are common features that appear in every design. The hull, the rigging and one or more masts are always present as the basic elements, and they are maintained by the crew that are responsible for the performance of the vessel.

Most people think that the basic sailing apparel consists of the common life jacket, t-shirts and comfy clothes for tropical weather. Generally speaking, this is true if you go sailing in a hot globe area and you stay close to the coasts. But when you are traveling on a longer cruise, you and your crew could get to places with cooler temperatures, and this is when your sailing apparel needs to save you from hypothermia. Windbreakers, jackets and vests should not miss from your baggage; the same holds true for tight sailing hats, water-repellent pants and sailing boots. The latter sailing apparel items are best manufactured from Kevlar due to the high waterproof features of this material.

Then, the hand compass makes an excellent navigation tool that complements or backups the function of the steering compass. A good hand compass allows the sailor to promptly and effectively correct any possible deviation, which could be essential to avoid an eventual collision. Choose such sailing gear responsibly, on quality considerations only: we are talking about your safety and that of anyone aboard.

Skiing Beginners Tips

by Adam Gillchrist

Nothing ever beats the pain of huffing and puffing as one trudges along on the snow that tops mountain peaks that look like they had been dusted with clear fresh icing sugar. The snow seeps through your boots somehow and wets your socks. You often lose balance and topple down on the icy floor, while your companions burst into a cackle of selfish glee. But sad stories should never be a part of one’s travelogue. Why fight the snow when you know that it can be worth so much fun to look at its better side? - Snow Sports! Yes, for all the brave hearts that are willing to brace themselves to race the wind down the slopes, skiing is the perfect option.

It never hurts to take some precautions, though, so you need to be equipped with some Skiing Beginners Tips. Skiing no doubt is great fun, but slipping on the frozen ground and falling hard on your back with your legs up in the air is indeed an awkward position that could bring the embarrassed blush on even the bravest cheeks. The first day on the snowfield will be more than just a test of your skills, balance, and patience. Your tolerance for pain should know no bounds as you slam down on your back and hear your bones crackle warningly. If you believe yourself to be a skiing star the first time itself, you are doomed. When you learn to ski, first you must learn to listen. Remember what the instructor tells you, and do things exactly in the way you are guided to do them. You will crash down onto the ground a couple of times, but do not worry about being ashamed. It is the only way you can ever learn.

Do not pamper yourself with the thought that the snow covering the ground will provide you with a soft landing- that is the most common mistake that the unwise make. The icy ground is relentlessly hard, and every single fall will be mercilessly painful. Do not wear jeans or sweat pants. There is a certain protocol regarding your sportswear as well. You must don thick Snow Skiing Suits with heavy padding that can cushion your fall. Unless you think of yourself as the Yeti, it is advisable that you wear warm clothes that could keep you happy and comfy in the bitter cold air. Over everything else, wear a waterproof jacket to prevent your clothes from getting soaked. Gloves are, no doubt, a necessity.

Boots are very important too. Make sure you know the size of your feet so that you do not end up buying shoes that are too loose or tight for them. Too loose, and you will never even get as far as a few yards before you thump your head against the snow. Wear them too tight, and you will feel like your feet are choking from the lack of proper blood circulation. Moreover, there would not even be enough space for you to wiggle your toes in them, and they may get bruised. And you would not like to have your adventure end shortly because of sore feet, right? It is very important that you learn the basic technique properly. Make sure you incline both your feet slightly towards each other, for that will keep your speed at check. Sliding down with legs parallel to each other gathers more speed, and for a novice like you, that spells great disaster. This first technique is called the snowplow that needs to be mastered quite well, and constant practice shall do the trick. Make sure that before you go to the mountain slopes you have no problem breathing in the thin air. If you do, sporting around in the icy slopes is a strict no-no. And once you are there, move around a lot, even when you are not skiing. Constant movement shall keep the metabolic wheels in your body at work, and they shall generate enough heat to warm you up.

The other thing for which you must be on the lookout is the weather conditions. Weather is known for her frisky ways, but in the mountains, she is more fickle-minded than ever. The sky can be a deep azure for a moment and in the next draw in storm clouds and drizzle you with soft flecks of snow. Snowfall can make the ground icier so that it becomes harder, and this enhances the risks of injuring yourself. More importantly, you must practice on wider slopes where there are more people than try the steeper regions. Your guide will tell you where to ski, and you must take his advice, always. There are certain Steamboat Springs Skiing resorts that are just the ideal place where one can lodge while learning how to ski safely. It will be wise of you to remember that safety always comes first. True, it is fun to let go sometimes and take it easy, but a sudden, nasty injury could turn fatal. It will not only spoil your happy mood, but also put you through a lot of pain that you could do without.

How to SKI safely

by Adam Gillchrist

Shocking Carp Fishing Bait Secrets That Save You A Fortune!

by Tim Richardson

How do you save money on bait and actually have this catch you more big fish?! It might be a strange question but the answers are extremely powerful indeed! Most of the bait you pay for is wasted because it literally does not transfer into caught fish; so find out how to save a fortune!

Big catfish and carp fishermen use many baits as ground baits, including maize, sweetcorn, hemp, boilies, pellets, and commercially made ground baits etc,) and these can cost you a fortune through each year! The vast percentage of this is actually wasted due to it not transferring into fish caught. This means excessive amounts of money are wasted because obviously something is being missed in the thinking and angling approach being used by the average angler!

There is no point spending money to feed fish unless perhaps you are a fish farmer! If you keep on doing what is not working most efficiently and expecting different results, this is akin to the common definition of insanity. Carp and catfish are living dynamically reactive creatures and really do remember and associate with dangerous baits, rigs, spots in swims, tackle detected and so on.

Even hard-fished for big catfish as well as carp can become particularly unresponsive to popular baits and techniques even though they may have been so successful previously! So how do you save all this wasted money on bait used in free baiting and actually improve your catches by converting your baiting into more fish, consistently; because that is the big issue here! You see it is not just bait costs which mount up through the year, but all the associated but increasing costs of fishing; like time not earning, travelling costs, food and drink money, fishing memberships or tickets, the huge regular costs of replacing all those fishing tackle bits etc!

In economically uncertain times, making the most of your money in terms of leveraging your fishing bait costs best, is generally far more important to everyone, (except the more fortunate minority.) This is maybe less of a problem where fishing is very easy and everyone seems to catch no matter what the level of their angling ability, experience or bait quality and so on but this refers to waters where fish react far more cautiously towards to fishing baits, rigs and so on. It seems to me that judging your results success by the average catches on such a water is not accurate at all; after all, how does any individual know what is truly able to be achieved?

Many wary fish on pressured waters will not feed on fresh baits put out as free baits, and those that do may even feed in far more alert modes of behaviour in order to detect dangerous hook baits more easily. If you got hooked each time you ate something your confidence and behaviour in eating something you desire is obviously going to change because such food is potentially it is a threat to your survival, despite when baits being designed to promote fish’s survival and you might wait 3 days or more before eating the leached-out baits! (It is a well-known fact that fish will feed far more confidently on bait that has been washed out as few anglers hook fish on such baits and so the associated danger of such baits is drastically reduced!)

Thinking about the bigger picture on a very pressured water, Mr average angler turns up, baits-up, fishes 48 hours and leaves fishless, and then most usually the next angler turns up in the swim and does the same things: with similar poor average results. This kind of pattern happens all year round on so many carp waters these days. Now and again, the angler who happens to time it lucky catches fish over all the old bait left by other anglers, but is mostly oblivious to this artificially built-up phenomenon. An anglers luck may be as bad as the old gone-off bait that fish have left uneaten; oblivious that the foul bait has killed-of the popular swim!

Our angling behaviours can become simply habitual processes, where the thought of what has worked in the past must still work today dominates. But I tend to find each day is a different day and fish behaviour is dynamic constantly changing and adapting and what worked so well yesterday is the very thing the fish are so keenly wary of today!

For instance, it was very lucky of me to catch a carp of 38 pounds; an amazing very pale white mirror (not koi carp) from one very pressured UK water. In over 7 years it was seen but not caught, but it was the combination of new bait, rig, baiting method and frequency and other things combined that produced this fish, (that all those anglers did not do previously,) and this unique combination produced dozens more good fish following this capture.

It took new bait attractors and rarely used feeding triggers in (new concentrations and combinations,) plus new baiting approaches, methods and applications to catch that very special fish which was followed by numbers of other good fish proving the effort of though even more worth-while. But there is something on every water to exploit that defeats the natural and angler-trained conditioning of fish responses and reactions to what you do in order to catch them. Being different even in one single way or combining new, adapted or new combinations of old ways etc can all achieve what just going through the motions cannot!

Your fully considering the short and long-term impacts of the competing baits and similar rigs and methods upon fish behaviours over time is essential, for consistent success, on so many pressured waters and even easy waters! With the application of a little thought, your catches on many waters can become far better and more consistent; and the advantages of doing your own unique thing always pay-off handsomely with correct fine-tuning. But this is without spending hundreds or thousands of pounds on popular baits that fish may already behave cautiously towards; hence such bait wastage!

12a It is true that to maximise the power and costs of your baits takes some thought, but a little effort can save you literally a fortune in wasted costs. So next time you arrive at your water and proceed to bait up as usual, you might stop mid-flow and take time to consider the many other solutions that are staring you in the face which you might presently be blind to but for a little extra thought; after all, the solutions that will be thought of in 10 years are available right now… This bait secrets books author has many more valuable fascinating insights and bait secrets to share but you need to look for them if they are to improve your own catches!

The Right Fishing Reel Makes all the Difference.

by Fishing Guy

Young prospective fishermen are usually exposed to fishing from an early age because their parents are into the sport. It’s a great way to get away and enjoy some quality family time. They typically get bought an inexpensive rod and reel with one of the latest Disney characters on it. For a kid, those reels can be pretty fun to use but once you get older and become more serious about fishing, you’ll need to start investing a little bit more money in better gear and finding the right reel to use will make all the difference in your success at fishing.

Understanding the 4 basic models of fishing reels will help you find the one that’s right for you. First, there is the spin casting reel. Second is the spinning reel. Third is the bait casting reel and fourth is the fly fishing reel.

The standard kids pack reels are usually the spin casting variety. These are very easy to use and with a little practice you can get pretty accurate with your casting. You basically push the button, cast and let go of the button. If timed correctly, you can get a pretty good cast providing the reel is a better quality reel.

A spinning reel is not for the novice and is the second most common type of reel next to the spin casting reels. Spinning reels have open faces and you can see the string in the reel. You have to pull back the bail to release the string and then control the cast with your thumb and forefinger. Most professional fishers use a spinning reel to catch their fish on. Because you can control the way the string leaves the reel, you can get very accurate casts when you cast into reeds or other areas fish like to hide.

A bait casting reel, on the other hand, provides the most control, allows for the most distance and can give anglers near perfect accuracy. The reason is quite simple: You can use your thumb to release and stop the fishing line before the weeds or logs, for instance, and predict quickly where the bait will land. However, the bait caster reel is trickier to use and takes a lot of practice to learn. If the reel is set to your specifications with the right line weight, then using the bait caster reel becomes astoundingly easier. Like some spinning reels, you’ll have to use your thumb to start and stop the reel. Additionally, like the spinning reel, the reel will hang down and not up when casting. By applying pressure from your thumb through the cast, you can slow down the fishing line spool and accurately cast in open waters.

The fly fishing reel rounds out the basic types of fishing reels. These reel don’t use standard fishing line and don’t even look like a typical fishing reel. Fly fishing is a learned talent and these reels play to the talent of the user. They are designed for precise casting and retrieving and a typical good quality fly reel can run you over several hundred dollars and up. Watching a fly fisherman or woman wade into the water with their waders and work an area with a fly rod and reel is an awesome sight to watch.
