The Super Bowl is Super Again

The Super Bowl has again lived up to its name this year. After last year’s epic New York Giants - New England Patriots Super Bowl, I thought I had been treated to the Super Bowl of a lifetime.
But for the second straight year, the NFL watched its showcase game won in the last minute of regulation.
For those of us old enough to remember, the Super Bowl was not always the game that it has become over the past decade.

In its early the years, the Green Bay Packers and the old NFL were superior to the old AFL, and the Super Bowl was nothing more than an exhibition to showcase the NFL power house Packers.
Throughout the 70’s and the early 80’s, the Steel Curtain ran supreme with Pittsburgh Steelers taking four titles, while the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, and Oakland Raider took turns bashing their weaker Super Bowl foe.
From the mid 80’s through the 1999 season, the Super Bowl became more known as the Super Routs. Year after year we witnessed one superior team bully another team as if it were a high school junior varsity squad.
But something very strange happened following the 1999 NFL season; we were treated to a great Super Bowl - the greatest of them all was said at the time. Kurt Warner and his St. Louis Rams held on to beat the Tennessee Titans 23-16, with Tennessee falling just yards short of the end zone on the final play of the game. And with it, a new beginning for the Super Bowl.
Since that Rams - Titans Super Bowl, we have been treated to four Super Bowl’s being decided by only three points, and a fifth being decided by four points.
The last two Super Bowl’s have seen one team score what appeared to be the game wining touchdown in the final five minutes (New England and Arizona), only to see their opponent score the real game winner in the final minute (Giants and Pittsburgh).
After the last two Super Bowl’s, the NFL Championship game is finally living up to its name (and hype). After decades of watching the NFL season end with the Super Rout, the NFL is finally ending its season with the Super Bowl.
